The purpose of the New Constitution Party was to rally support to call for a Constitutional Convention to write a new Constitution for California. The movement was successful, and a new California Constitution was approved by voters in May 1879.

Not related to either the Constitution Party (1950), or the current national Constitution Party of which the American Independent Party is an affiliate.
